Illinois Drivers Manual in English
Illinois Drivers Manual in Spanish
In Illinois you are required to take a written driver permit exam if you are applying for a driver license for the first time. Also, if you are moving to Illinois from another state you must after 90 days surrender your out of state license and then apply for an Illinois drivers license permit and must also take the written driving exam. You must also pass a vision test and may be required to take the behind the wheel driving test as well depending on other factors including your driving record.
This permit test is usually assumed to be easy, but the truth is that most people who take the DMV drivers test for the first time actually fail the exam. You have to have some driver education before you can reasonably expect to pass. The people who fail could be the best drivers in the state of Illinois, but if they are not prepared with the knowledge and familiar with how the tests are administered, it could be a long day or days at the Department of Motor Vehicles. You need to practice.
