The written driver test is required for anyone applying for a Iowa drivers license or permit. The written driving test is based on highway signs and Iowa traffic laws. The test is usually given by computer at MVD testing stations. On each test you are given the number of questions you can miss in order to pass the exam. You may also be required to take the written permit exam if you allow your Iowa driver's license to expire or if you are from another country. The majority of people who take the DMV permit test the first time do not pass the exam. Most believe that the written test will be easy simply because they are good drivers and that is not the case. Passing the Iowa test takes a minimum amount of driver ed and a clear understanding of the laws and signs that govern the roads of our state. Practice the sample driver ed and permit questions that we provide on this site and you will have a much higher chance of passing the first time around.
Remember to bring those necessary items to the driver permit test. Your glasses or contacts needed to read along with extra time to allow for waiting in line. The amount of time varies greatly so be prepared.
