To obtain an Indiana drivers license permit you must take the written driving exam. The examination covers Indiana traffic laws, traffic signs and signals, safe driving practices and is given in multiple choice format. You are required to take the written permit exam in Indiana if you are applying for a first time drivers permit, if you have not yet turned 21 years old, have points on your Indiana driving record and are renewing your driver license, if you held an out of state license and are applying for an Indiana driver license, if your license has been expired for more than two years, or if you are applying for a driver license and have had six or more points on your Indiana record.
