In order to obtain a (class D) driver license permit in Massachusetts you must take a written driver permit test. The fee to take the written test is $30. The examination is 20 questions in a multiple choice format of which you must answer 14 correct in the 20 minute time limit. National studies have shown that most people actually fail the exam the first time because they are not prepared adequately. It is highly recommended that potential driver candidates use some sort of driver ed before taking the permit test. The written test is given by computer and can be taken in both English and Spanish. When you take the exam by computer you can only skip a question one time. If you skip a question twice a wrong answer is given. These permit tests can be very challenging and even drivers with very high skill levels will need to study and may need some driver education in order to ensure that they will pass the exam.
Be prepared to wait for your turn to take the examination. The Registry of Motor Vehicles can be be very busy especially on Mondays and Fridays. Try to avoid the lunch hours as many people try to cram the exam in while at lunch. Study as many practice driver ed questions here on our site as you can. You will be more likely to pass the Registry of Motor Vehicle examination and be a much better driver as well.
