In order to obtain a first time drivers license in Minnesota you must apply for a driver permit, pass a written driving exam, pass a vision test, and pass a behind the wheel road test as well. If your Minnesota driver license has been expired for one year, but less than five years then you must also pass a written permit exam and a vision test before applying for a new drivers license. If you are moving to Minnesota from another state you must also pass the written driving exam and vision test as well as present a valid license from a different state. If you are relocating to Minnesota from another country you must also pass a written driver permit test, a vision test, and a behind the wheel road test. The written test can be taken at driver examination stations located throughout the state.
The written test is a multiple choice test with some true or false questions that test your understanding of traffic law and road signs. The written test is given by computer or paper at a Public Safety exam station. Some level of driver ed is recommended especially for those becoming licensed for the first time in the state of Minnesota. You are allowed to take only one written permit test per day.
